Lebkuchen

One of the traditions that I now love is making Lebkuchen with my friend each year. Lebkuchen is a very local Christmas treat, and it originated in Nuremburg (which is quite close). It bakes in the shape of a cookie, but we make it with potato. There is plenty of sugar to sweeten it up, and the fun part (besides getting to mix it up with your hands), is the decorating. My kids LOVE the tradition - although after the first few batches (it makes a ton), they do seem to scatter, while I finish the decorating :-). Lebkuchen can be found in all of the famous Christmas Markets and stores during Weinachten (the German Word for Christmas). It is perfect to make a big batch, and share it with neighbors and friends! It was especially cute last night, because Mia brought some to our upstairs neighbor to share, little did we know at the exact same time, they were upstairs making Christmas treats to share with us as well!
