| Cleaning up after a successful hard days work!! |
Since May, we have been in the process of buying a very tiny apartment (flat) here in Bamberg. I mentioned how completely different the real estate procedures are here, and it has been a true learning process. Last Friday, we finally got the keys, and it is officially ours. The kicker is we have to put a lot of work into the apartment. "The bones" of the place are in good shape - so nothing structural, but it is over 100 years old, and has been rented out for 30 years to the same person, so it needs quite a bit of updating. Sunday was our first free day to get in there and work, and I am so grateful for having a family of 5 to help! The kids were fantastic, and we were able to get about 75% of the 100 years of wallpaper layers off of the walls :-) Thankfully also, the construction here is all made of cement (not wood), which makes the peeling process a bit easier. It has been interesting also to research real estate here, because Germany did not not have the same "housing boom" with regard to prices like we did 6 years ago. Their real estate is VERY consistent and fair, and I also read that about 40% of the population rents opposes to own. The rental pricing is very "Fair" also and the laws favor the people renting (not the owners), so it is often to ones advantage to rent. It is always very interesting for me to learn about.... We still have about 1 1/2 months of work to go before it is ready, but are very excited to have put in our first day of work :-).
