Yesterday, we gathered the metal detector, shovels, rakes, and bug spray, and took off into the forest (A.K.A woods). My Dad had recently discovered an old picture and and then further researched it with an old map, which showed that there was an old school (a one room school house) on their land around the mid 1800's. As a kid growing up, it had been long forgotten, but my dad knew the general area that it would have been, so we took off on our expedition. The area is now nothing but trees, but when we dug under the fallen pinestraw, we found the old chimney, and plenty of stones that probably formed the foundation. We were hoping to find something that may have fallen out when the children were playing, but with the bugs decided that we would need to wait until a different season to really look. We had fun though, and on the way back home the kids discovered a couple of metal railroad spikes that had been covered by dirt on the path where there was once an old train. The train was around in the early 1900's (the track is no longer there, but the path where it was remains a path for snow mobilers, bikers, and cross country skiiers). A really fun time!
