Bodensee/Lake Constance

We had a super fun weekend for Labor Day visiting a huge lake that Borders Austria, Switzerland and Germany. It is funny because the lake is Called the "Bodensee" if you live in Germany, but it is called "Lake Constance" if you live in Switzerland. We began the weekend in Germany by visiting a natural Barbarian Ape Habitat, where you can feed the apes right out of your hand. We joked that they were very "German" like (unlike the Barbarian Apes in Gibraltor, who were much more aggressive). The kids LOVED it, and the highlight for me was to see the babies being carried on the backs of the Mommas (so incredibly cute!) We walked freely within the woods along a path, and when the Apes wanted to be fed, they would sit on logs and you could walk right up to them and feed them. In the Afternoon, we visited a structure where you can climb up, and enjoy sweeping views of the lake, and Switzerland and Austria.

We then spent the night in Austria at the same place we went, when we first moved to Germany - (it was our first "road trip" 3 years ago). There is a famous Gorge there called the Rappenloch, which we had fun hiking last time (thinking back, Mia was only 3 years old - so this visit was MUCH easier!). The only problem was, about 1 mile into it, we discovered the trail had been destroyed by a huge Avalanche in the Spring - it was blocked off for safety, but we all thought it was "cool" to see the huge bolders that had fallen (our first avalanche sighting :-)). A picnic Dinner at a river bed, was the highlight for the kids because they could run around and explore.

On Sunday, we went to Lindau Island in Germany (absolutely beautiful and Quaint), and then caught a Ferry Boat over to Rorschach, Switzerland. In Rorschach, they were having a sand sculpture contest, and it was amazing to see the works of art - Quite impressive! We had a nice afternoon over there, and then headed back on the Ferry to Lindau. The entire weekend, we had great weather, except, as soon as we stepped off the Ferry it started to absolutely downpour (and we had about a mile to walk back to our car before we headed back to Bamberg). It was hilarious to see our family of 5 trying to find cover here and there while getting completely soaked. The funniest, was when we all ducked into a Telephone Booth (yes all 5 of us) for about 20 minutes, until the rain let up (except it never really did :-) Great Memories!!!
