Last Weekend was Bamberg's biggest festival of the year. Over a million people came to this town (home to only 60,000 usually) to celebrate. This year was the 59th anniversary of Sankerwa. It is actually the 2nd largest festival in Bavaria (only second to Oktoberfest). Needless to say we spent most of the weekend enjoying the festival. They have food and drink stands spread around the old section of town (by old I mean 1000 years opposed to only 500 years). They have a jousting contest on the river near an area called little Venice. They have music and kids rides, people walking around in dirndls and lederhosen (which is typically more common in southern Bavaria rather than this area which is called Franconia). The sights, sounds, and smells were wonderful while walking in this midevil city - we truly enjoyed it!
