Festival

This weekend we went to a Church Festival that was so much fun! All of the old games that we knew as kids were there for enjoyment. Our kids had never enjoyed anything like it! No bouncy things, children’s rides, or electronic games, but just good old fashioned games for enjoyment and boy did the kids have fun. I think we were the last ones to leave (literally!) They did the potato sack race, walking on stilts, the ski walk, and a new German toy that we had not seen where you stand on a platform and basically petal with no hands on anything to help. Mia and her best pal Megan even got to have their faces plastered like a cast and bring home the plaster to paint. Megan's Mom and I joked that it was the longest period of silence that we have ever been around them to witness (usually they are none stop chatter boxes :-)). We also went into the Natural History Museum and then got to climb the church bell tower to observe the most stunning view of Bamberg that we have seen to date. We really do love this town and have so enjoyed getting back to the old fashioned way of life (before liability). As Bryan was walking up the old (and I'm talking OOOLLLLDDDDDDDD!!!!!!) Church Tower we heard creek's in the old wood and we immediately remembered that if we were home, we would never be able to do this because of liability issues. My 4 year daughter would never be able to get her face plastered (O.K. it does sound a little funny) by a teenage boy due to liability issues! It is just so refreshing that parents take responsibility for their actions and nothing bad usually happens (just like the old days). I forgot to mention the game where there was a lighted long candle and the game was to shoot the fire out with a suction water (shot-type) accessory. Again, would you ever allow a 2-6 year old to do that where we are from - so simple, yet so fun and if observed carefully, so safe!

You are so right about liability. We are so restricted anymore because of law suits, etc......Lew's friend was taken to court because he put his arm up to block a child from slugging another child on the bus. Lost his job, etc...... Of course the case was dismissed but the damage had been done to Mike's future as a county employee. We are told not to touch the children. That is a shame.

I am not looking forward to Skyler and Maggie being in the public school system. The curriculum has gone crazy and is so data driven that little instruction goes on in the classroom. I am sure many parents who can afford it will be sending their children to private schools when they become aware of the curriculum this fall.

I am glad your family is enjoying some good old fashion fun. It will be a culture shock to you all when you return to Evans. The pictures reflect the difference.

Continue to enjoy and thanks again for sharing all the wonderful pictures and fun that you all are having. Love to all, gp
